Saturday April 6 & Sunday, April 7. Pulling from the idea of the ideomotor phenomenon that is considered the ‘invisible player’ in an Ouija board game, our curiosity dives into how to train this subconscious “decider” that works at an underlying level of consciousness where we ‘do’ without thinking. In this partnering class we emphasise hyper listening and empathic moving. We question what it means to join a movement journey and to explore manipulation in solidarity, and we explore how to let that ‘animal spirit’ under our skin move (through) us. Celebrating the long-standing relationship between Japan’s Imperial Family and the Kingdom of Hawaii, we welcome our Golden Week visitors to savor some Hawaiian healing.
The process of healing unfolds in many steps. Drawing on lessons of hula, lei making, lomilomi, ceremony and oli (chanting), students weave healing practices into a tailored treatment that addresses body, mind and spirit.
The activity is led by kumu hula, Malia Helela, traditionally trained hula instructor, lomilomi practitioner and cultural advisor. Our native Japanese translator, Eriko Jones, has a decade of experience in Hawaiian practices with Kumu Malia.Find out more »
May Day is Lei Day in Hawai’i! Join our halau - our school of hula - Na Hula Ola Aloha, and celebrate Lei Day through music and dance. Kumu Malia’s hula dancers will make your heart sing!
Kumu Malia herself has choreographed many of the dances; others she is passing down from her long hula lineage. Malia’s students range in age from preschoolers in keiki halau, to mixed age kahiko students, to gracious ladies in our Aloha Friday Hula Classes. Dancers on May Day perform in both the ancient kahiko and modern ‘auana hula styles.Find out more »
5 Sundays: May 19 to June 16, 2019 5 - 8 pm. This particular lomilomi training, entitled “Moving through Space”, focuses on the skeletal system and the movement of bones in lomilomi treatments and hula.
This “Moving through Space” lomilomi massage training is one of 8 complementary training programs, each 16 hours long. As a whole, her 8 complementary programs, each with its own focus, provide 128 hours of training that comprises her full culturally-based approach to lomilomi massage. Malia will give this current training compressed into a single 16 hours weekend intensive.Find out more »
4 Sundays in June. June 2, 9, 23, 30. Keiki students are introduced to 2 instruments in this series. They dance with an ipu (gourd) and puʻili (split bamboo). Kumu Malia also includes classic hula dances using the hands only.
