Wednesdays, July 25, Aug 1 & 8. Sacred Healing Dance is a free form movement class meant to restore wellness through motion. Our thoughts trap energy in certain parts of the body, and like massage, “working” that area with movement, breath, and processing can help release it. Every class is different. WaveContinuum is an invitation to experience life as Movement. This spontaneous, organic dance is full of surprises and reaches far above the movement possibilities commonly known to us. Designed for experienced/continuing dancers to complete an original Bollywood choreography for performance. We'll cover performance dynamics, facial expression, energy use and elements of Indian dance. We'll showcase our dance at the November 11th Diwali celebration at Still & Moving Center, as well as at other community performance events. 8 Sundays - Aug 12 - Sept 30. Hawaiian lomilomi massage is unique in all of the ways that Hawai’i is unique. Lomilomi acknowledges and appreciates the influence of Hawaii’s natural environment on its healing practices. Saturday April 6 & Sunday, April 7. Pulling from the idea of the ideomotor phenomenon that is considered the ‘invisible player’ in an Ouija board game, our curiosity dives into how to train this subconscious “decider” that works at an underlying level of consciousness where we ‘do’ without thinking. In this partnering class we emphasise hyper listening and empathic moving. We question what it means to join a movement journey and to explore manipulation in solidarity, and we explore how to let that ‘animal spirit’ under our skin move (through) us. Kumu Malia herself has choreographed many of the dances; others she is passing down from her long hula lineage. Malia’s students range in age from preschoolers in keiki halau, to mixed age kahiko students, to gracious ladies in our Aloha Friday Hula Classes. May 16-18. For hula teachers, this 3-Day immersion will deepen your connections to the roots and foundations of hula. It may also qualify you for further mentoring under Kumu Malia.
Over 3 full days, experience many components of the revered Hawaiian hula tradition. Dance, oli, Hawaiian language, ceremony, lei-making, connection to nature, history and culture lessons as well as visits to sacred sites make up this immersive experience. Organized by the Take Back The Night Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, this nation-wide Shine Your Light event features yoga/movement studios from all 50 states. Sundays starting May 31st, 8:30 am - 9:15 am (HST) Keiki Hula 3-6 Year Olds, Sundays 9:30 am - 10:30 am (HST) Keiki Hula 7-12 Year Olds. Children who participate in hula hālau (school) receive one of the best introductions to Hawaiian language and culture. Kumu Mālia teaches the basic moves of both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula 'auana (modern hula), as well as oli (Hawaiian chanting). Keiki (children) also learn a true appreciation for nature.
