February 10 & May 18, 2020Book now!
Rather than an in-depth lomilomi training, this is a stand-alone event for you to enjoy on a single day. Lomilomi, like all forms of healing, is an unfolding process of many steps, and this would be a good first step!
Kumu Malia’s Puana approach to lomilomi focuses on settling the nervous system and integrating all parts of the body into one. Drawing on lessons from hula and lei making, students weave lomilomi massage techniques into a tailored treatment that addresses body, mind and spirit.
This activity begins and ends at Still & Moving Center, 1024 Queen Street, Honolulu, a community based mindful movement Center that has been offering multicultural classes, events and workshops for over 9 years, in the heart of Kaka’ako.
- The activity is led by kumu hula, Malia Helela, traditionally trained hula instructor, lomilomi practitioner and cultural advisor
- The activity is offered with live simultaneous translation to Japanese.
- Discover a new perspective through the eyes of a traditional healer and cultural practitioner
- Learn about the historical highlights and evolution of the Hawaiian traditional art of lomilomi
- Make connections between traditional & contemporary healing practices and their relation to overall health and well-being
- Experience a hula & self-care massage techniques

Through the easy and gentle movements prescribed in the Feldenkrais Method, we learn to recognize and eliminate many of the common habits that interfere with deep breathing and good spinal organization. This workshop will focus on the diaphragm and lungs, neck, 7th cervical vertebrae, and how to lengthen rounded backs or scoliosis from the inside out.
We know that diaphragm works, day in and day out, to move our lungs. Did you know the diaphragm also has an intimate relationship with the heart and the neck? The 7the cervical – with many nerves going down the arms and the spine – is the key vertebrae in this connection. Dr. Feldenkrais once said: “We would not have neck problems if our lungs could glide freely.”
The diaphragm is a large muscle in the center of our body that is badly understood and neglected. When it does not move well, the diaphragm not only hampers oxygen intake but also pulls on our chest and neck.
Though our mindful movement today, we’ll help the 7th cervical vertebrae to communicate with the diaphragm and lungs, freeing up the neck!

Get ready! Nia with Valerie is spunky, sassy and irrepressibly fun. We leave inhibitions at the door and become fully available to ourselves. Ultimately, her goals are to inspire us to:
feel – in order to heal;
to listen to our bodies – in order to find the “aaaah” in every move;
and to gain confidence – in order to manifest who we truly are, both on and off the dance floor!
Valerie believes “Nia magic” happens when we step into our power and get in the driver seat of our workout routine.
“I fell in love with Nia when I started to feel the results. I’ve increased my strength, flexibility, and range of motion, resulting in greater power, balance and comfort. I’ve improved my breathing and vocalization from the use of sounding, and the cherry on top has been creating a meaningful connection to self. My entire Nia journey has cultivated a loving relationship between my inner and outer worlds.”
Valerie discovered Nia Technique® March 2011 when Still & Moving Center first opened its doors to the public. It took her 15 minutes to realize she’d found the movement medicine she’d been yearning for, Nia.
Says Valerie, “I take many types of classes and I enjoy being a ‘newbie’ to other movement modalities, but no matter where else I go, I always come back to Nia. To me there simply isn’t another fitness and lifestyle program that says ‘I LOVE MYSELF’ more than Nia. You have to experience it to believe it: join me!”
Upon completing Nia White Belt training at Still & Moving, she packed her life and her practice into a bag and embarked on a long-term trip around the world. During this time, she trained, grew and cultivated with other Nia communities. Her travels to other Nia communities – Bali, Australia, Thailand, Nicaragua, New York, Tallahassee, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver and Headquarters in Portland, Oregon, to name a few – have brought Valerie depth and realness, and tools for living.
Valerie teaches people how to move, get fit, and live in their body in healthy and meaningful ways. As a Nia Moving to Heal teacher and Nia Move IT coach she tailors her classes to all ability levels. Valerie is also the Founder of Groove and Wellness LLC and a Certified Corporate Wellness Coach.
