Have you ever wondered how a belly dance teacher might give themselves a great workout? This is your chance to sneak into a dance teacher’s ‘home studio’ and follow along. In addition to a getting an intro to Turkish Belly Dance as a whole-body practice, you’ll also focus on your hips, core and arms – with great music as you go!

Your teacher Murat Demirtas teaches not only dance, but also Pilates and Foam Rolling Massage. Meanwhile he’s a Personal Trainer.  He shows you variations of intensity levels so that you can adapt your workout to what works best in YOUR body. He’ll start you out with a dance warmup, then take you through beginning Turkish Belly Dance moves and steps, dancing all the way. Go from there into a muscle-strengthening workout, followed by the chance to roll out and stretch. 

Be ready for a cool drink and a hot shower by the time you finish. First shimmy, then shine! You’ll feel like a million bucks!

Feel free to have a foam roller, rolled towel, and/or tennis balls available. You can wear a belly dance skirt or any fabric piece to tie around your hips.

Start with the basics, at a relaxed pace. Learn all the fundamental motions for Turkish belly dance, starting with the hip roll and upper body movements. Murat introduces you to all the basic categories of Turkish belly dance, such as the 5 types of shimmy.
Murat presents the class in a slow, easy-to-approach manner that will still give you a great workout! You can take this class as introduction to prepare you for the faster, more challenging Turkish Belly Dance for Fitness and Belly Dance for Performance classes.

This class is also excellent cross training for many dance and other movement formats. You find muscles you never knew you had! You increase core strength, while greatly improving your body control and ability to operate different parts of your body independently.

This is not your typical belly dance class. You will improve your cardiovascular capacity and increase muscle strength through basic and unique movements. While the focus will be on the hips and abs, this belly dance helps you to vibrate all the muscles in your body, which in turn helps to increase cell activity. Vibration is key to any health regime in fitness, but belly dance vibration will magnify this element to a higher degree. You increase internal strength, becoming more confident in yourself and freeing your personality through the belly dance workout. You will release your stress, smile, laugh, have fun and sweat.

Half a world away from Turkey, Murat Demirtas is sharing his knowledge of Turkish style belly dance—with a twist. Murat’s style is rooted in Istanbul and incorporates a unique modern flare, which bridges the distant worlds of Turkey and Hawaii.

This night will take you on a journey and reveal the exotic tastes and sounds of Turkey. Members of Murat’s performance group Turkish Wings and students from his belly dance classes at Still and Moving Center will help Murat create this bridge. Live Turkish music will make you want to dance, and the performances will leave you filled with joy. Special guest performances from others who love and teach belly dance will round out this exclusive international journey.

Give yourself a deep-tissue massage using foam roller and tennis balls with your own body-weight. As a Personal Trainer, Murat is very detailed as to where and how to roll, as well as where and how NOT to roll. Learn how to breathe through the tight spots and trigger points. Murat teaches you how to find and release tight places with the foam roller, giving you suggestions for body-positioning to help you find those points. During breaks in the rolling and conditioning, he leads you through movements to heal the lower back. When you leave class, you find yourself greatly relieved of pain. Counter-indications: People with recent shoulder/neck/back injuries or surgeries should wait until they have recovered before taking the class. Once you are on the road to recovery, Murat will customize the class to meet your needs.

The Fitness Cue® is gentle on joints, and gives you the “Cue” of corrective exercise. The focus is on alignment, symmetry, flexibility, strength, and fun! This class starts with a hand-weight workout from a chair, then moves into using the Fitness Cue®. Murat shows you how to customize this dynamic exercise to accommodate all fitness levels. You can get a cardio workout if you so choose! The Fitness Cue®  provides stabilization when you may have concerns with strength and balance. This class is a mix of Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, dance, and martial arts using Fitness Cue®. This hands-on class is for all ages, all levels of physical condition.

Join returning Swiss dance artist Meissoun, and our own Still & Moving instructor/performer, Willow, for a joyful Spring dance hafla! Hafla is an Arabic word meaning a party or social gathering. In the belly dance world the term hafla is an event where students, professionals, and members of the public come together for the sake of the dance.

Our dance showcase features Oriental Belly Dance, Indian Bollywood, Turkish Belly Dance, American Tribal Belly Dance, Contemporary, Vogue and more, by our hosts and special dance artists, including Murat Demirtas! A feast for the spirit – and not to be missed!

Bio:  Meissoun is Switzerland’s most internationally-known dancer and teacher for Oriental and Bollywood dance. Her experience spans over 20 years of performances, workshops and other events all over Europe and the American continent. As a dancer, Meissoun impresses with her gracefulness, expression and musicality – as a teacher with her clearly structured, well researched and good-humoured classes.

Meissoun lives in Zurich and travels around the globe to dance. MEISSOUN is an Arabic name meaning “she with the grace and the walk of a gazelle.” She started her dance education in 1990 with Layali Römer, then continued with Karin Azaria Siegrist, Nelly Mazloum, Mo Gedawwi, Raqia Hassan, Lilo von Hugo, Tania Cook, Helena Cremona and many other well respected teachers. Meissoun also studies Bharata Natyam (classical Indian dance) with Barbara Dejung as well as Indian folk dances like Bhangra and Dandiya. She has danced and taught Bollywood dance since 2000.
