Jivamukti is a physically and intellectually stimulating vinyasa style of yoga that integrates the physical, philosophical and spiritual aspects of yoga. Like ashtanga yoga, Jivamukti yoga can include hands-on assists to help students find alignment – only with students’ consent, of course. Classical yoga teachings, drawn from a monthly focus, stream through the class in a way that is relevant to modern day life. Each class grounds itself in 14 key elements and involves Sanskrit, chanting, teachings, and flowing asana sequences set to uplifting music, with meditation and a deep relaxation to close. 

Jivamukti Yoga is a thorough, vigorous vinyasa practice whose teachers adhere to five tenets: ahimsa (non-violence), bhakti (devotion), meditation, nada (sacred sound), and study of yogic texts. 

Sarah McTee

Whether small or large, Sarah’s classes feel personal and create a safe environment to let your true self shine through, providing a path to apply yoga in your everyday life. Like many who practice at the Still & Moving Center, Sarah is an ocean-loving yogi. She moved to Hawaii in 2002 to attend graduate school at UH, specializing in coral reef ecology. When life subsequently carried her to the east coast she was introduced to, and became a dedicated student of, the Jivamukti style of yoga. Studying with the founders, David Life and Sharon Gannon, and under the rigorous and inspiring mentorship of Andrea Boyd, Sarah received her certification to teach Jivamukti in 2011. Since then, Sarah has augmented her yoga practice and teachings with the study of massage therapy.

The purpose of Stress Management Movement Meditation is to enhance everyday life through awareness of the equilibrium of a healthy mind and body, via healing movement. The techniques are designed to reduce stress-bound ki energy and allow it to flow through the whole body.

What is Stress Management Meditation?

  • Unraveling stress in the mind through body movements.
  • Having the mind concentrate on each movement holistically.
  • Coordinating thought and breathing to become one as movement is created.
  • Recognizing that muscles and nerves are controlled by the mind while you are moving.
  • Seeking the source of movement creation, the mind which cannot be seen, known or touched.
  • Exploring the question, “What am I?” in the unsolvable quest that is Yimoko meditation. Yimoko is the embodiment of movement united with breath, sound and thought.
  • Exploring the movement with breathing, Yimoko and mudra (hand movement) that is defined as Mudra meditation.
  • Releasing worry and stress, nerves and muscles through movement meditation.
  • Expressing inner feelings through improvised movement.
  • Transforming anger, sadness, excitement, distress, etc. into equilibrium.

This Stress Management technique can improve body posture, increase flexibility of body movement, strengthen abdominal and sphincter muscles, and alleviate incontinence. It helps the mind-body balance, relieving stress-induced problems, such as insomnia, weak stomach, diabetes, high blood pressure and computer syndrome.

The movement practice can benefit one’s physique and diet. Concentrating the mind on the  breathing can bring peace of mind and contentment with life.

Dr. Sun Ock Lee

Sun Ock Lee is both a practitioner of Zen meditation from Korea and a world-renowned dancer, choreographer, teacher. Her life’s work, Zen Dance, is a fusion of both worlds: meditation and movement.

Beyond creating mindful dance art, Sun – or “Sunny” – is dedicated reducing human suffering in the world. Her vocal meditation continually poses the question, “What is the true self?” Every aspect of her meditative movement technique is designed to provide mental, emotional and physical freedom from the stress and anxiety of the complex world we live in.

Traveling the globe, working everywhere from India to New York, from Europe to Singapore and Australia, sharing her dance and insight, Sun has received numerous honors and awards from artistic, scholarly and medical corners.

A huge presence in a tiny body, she is as powerful as she can be ethereal. A review of one of her performances in New York, where she taught and danced for years, included this description: “Time stood still, and every step and gesture seemed to emerge from eternity.” And from another review of her dance, Sun Ock Lee was “poised… between body and spirit.”

Prolific in sharing the wisdom she has garnered over her lifetime, Sun is the author of a number of books on, including Zen Quest: Enlightenment in Dance and Zen Dance – Meditation in Movement.  Dr. Lee is the Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Network (under UNESCO).

Thursdays 5:45 – 6:45 pm – Starts September 14th with a free introductory class!

In this Vinyasa and restorative yoga combination class you enjoy benefits of flowing between both worlds. Start slowly with our deep, yin practice, move into a vinyasa flow, then close with a restorative yin. The tone of the class is light, so you walk out feeling as if you’ve been on holiday!

This class helps you to naturally reset a healthy balance between both sides of the spectrum: mental and physical, strength and flexibility, exertion and rest.

Your two teachers, Ciara and Lee-Ann, also balance one another out. One of them wants to guarantee that you sleep well tonight from the effort you’ve put into your practice; the other hopes you’ll sleep well once the restoration session releases all your tensions of the day! Lee-Ann’s humor counterpoises Ciara’s earnestness.  Here’s a typical repartee between the two:

Ciara: “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.”

Lee-Ann: “If you’re not breathing, you’ve got other issues!”

Both teachers graduated from Claudia Castor’s fine Adhi Shakti yoga teacher training at Still & Moving Center, and both are students of our beloved David Sanders.

All levels are welcome to this class. Your teachers say: “You don’t have to start out all bendy to come to yoga. That’s the point! Just start from where you are!”

 

Ciara Steynberg – the Yin side of the class formula

Ciara explains each move in an unruffled, easy-to-understand manner, emanating a sense of patience and ease. She helps people to calm themselves. Students find her to be friendly and approachable. With Ciara’s lead you’ll come back to a place of inner retreat and relaxation. Her focus on awareness and alignment ensures that you maintain safety during this class.  

Ciara is a school teacher and is also certified in children’s yoga. A little known aspect of her life is that she spins fire!

Lee-Ann Kong – The Yang side of the class equation

Lee-Ann’s approach is fun and energetic. She encourages you to keep going even when you want to quit. Hey, you want to earn those fried foods credits for after class, right?!? When she coaches you to do your best, that doesn’t mean to do someone else’s best. We’re all here to get better, she reasons, so just push yourself to do a tiny bit better than you did before…and laugh your way through it! She reminds you to tune into your personal safety. You don’t need to do the full fancy pose – she gives you options to stay within your range of comfort.

Lee-Ann likes bringing to class crystals, candles, and essential oils for aromatherapy. She studies under a feng shui master learning how universal energy flow affects us on the personal level, and she bring that understanding to her practice and teaching of yoga.

Prerequisite: Aerial Level 1 classes and instructor permission.

Given the lyrical, gracefully acrobatic movements aerialists can perform on this apparatus, it is appropriately called “lyra”. While upper body strength is cultivated by practicing lyra, it also provides beautiful resting poses.

This class is for students who are able to get on and off the lyra without a spot. Students will learn basic poses and variations under the lyra, straddles with variations, poses in the lyra, and balance poses. Contra-indications for aerial classes: glaucoma, heart-conditions, fused spine, pregnancy beyond doctor recommendation. Clothing requirements: tight-fitting; no zippers or metal; under-arms covered. No jewelry.

Kezia Holm

Kezia aims to inspire others to live to their full potential by being open and chasing their souls’ passion. Aerial holds a special space in her life. It sparked a fire that allowed her to explode into a whole new rainbow of color and creativity. Kezia took her Aerial Fundamentals and Lyra teacher trainings from the esteemed NECCA, the New England Center for the Circus Arts, and her Aerial Yoga training from Wendi Lynch of Aerial Yoga Hawaii.
Kezia first dove into flow arts in 2008 when she fell in love with a hula hoop, appreciating its freedom and beauty in the expression. In addition to aerial dance, Kezia is also devoted to other flow arts practices, including horseback arts and yoga. By practicing gratitude for all teachers, experiences and opportunities she has had along the way, Kezia continues to enhance and share her knowledge through study, practice and teaching. Kezia has had the opportunity to study under a number of Acro Yoga Instructors including during her Yoga Teacher Training.

Yin Yoga, also known as Taoist Yoga, targets connective tissue, specifically ligaments and tendons in the joints and spine. To lengthen the connective tissue, we extend the duration of the postures, engaging in static stretching. When the muscle is fully stretched, the stress reaches the connective tissue. In yin yoga, asanas are usually held for three to five minutes. Because of the long duration of asanas, one of the key values cultivated in the practice of yin yoga is patience. It is quite a meditative practice.

If the muscles are cold, they will be less elastic, and more therapeutic stress will be transferred to the connective tissue. For this reason, it is recommended that yin yoga be practiced earlier in the day, before physical activity that warms the muscles and increases their elasticity. However, some note that practicing yin yoga after a strenuous day is psychologically soothing.

Over time, practice of yin yoga can lengthen these tissues, increasing range of motion. As connective tissue accounts for about fifty percent of the body’s resistance to range of motion, focusing on connective can dramatically increase flexibility. The intensity and physical benefits of the practice depend on duration of the asana (pose) and the temperature of the muscle.

We can think of our “witness” as that aspect of ourselves that is always calmly and nonjudgmentally watching all that we do. We gain great understanding by listening to the insight provided by our own, private, witness. Reflecting on our internal transitions as we dance allows us to perceive and embody our divinity within.

 

During this workshop series we’ll use the elements in nature that arise within our own physicality. We’ll deepen our understanding of our natural self as we tap into our senses.

 

  • On February 7th, we’ll explore our fluid self
  • On February 21st our earthy self
  • On March 6th our fire self and working with passion and purpose.

 

We emphasize breath and movement – sometimes mirroring each other’s movements – in all our workshops. We also incorporate expressive arts through drawing and journaling.

Mary Francis has facilitated 9 workshops for the Sacred Dance Guild, Hawaii Chapter over the past 14 years. She was a presenter at the Festival in 2001 and just presented again at the Waves of Grace Festival 2015.

Her passion is explorations of our natural connections with Mother Earth using the moving meditation practice of Authentic Movement/Contemplative Dance.

She is a Registered Expressive Arts consultant and educator, a Registered Movement Therapist, a certified yoga instructor and her PhD is in Transpersonal Psychology. Her research was creative and intuitive in nature and used the form Authentic Movement in nature to seek elements of transformation.
