Tuesdays 7:15-8:15 pm.

Experience the thrill of applying your skill in the air to different aerial disciplines. In this class, you will practice your skills on various apparatus such as Straight Silks, Hammock, Lyra, Trapeze, as well as in floor exercises and stretching. Learn techniques and strength-building exercises that are relevant to all aerial mediums. As you transfer your skills from one apparatus to another, you discover similarities and differences, as well as where you feel most at home. Aerial apparatus cross training improves core control, grip strength, and upper body strength. Note: it takes more than one class to feel these benefits! Enjoy a fabulous, unique workout with restful, rejuvenating closure.

Contra-indications for aerial classes: glaucoma, heart-conditions, fused spine, pregnancy beyond doctor recommendation. Clothing requirements: tight-fitting; no zippers or metal; under-arms covered. Jewelry off. T-shirt on!

Pre-requisite: Aerial experience and prior teacher approval before the night of your first Mixed Aerial Apparatus class.

Sharlene Bliss

Sharlene’s aerial practice brings balance, joy and creativity to her life, and she thrives on the focus, systemic movement and neuro-muscular pathways that develop in the body.

She started her aerial education in 2010 at Samadhi Hawaii, where she is privileged to continue her practice as a student under the guidance of Samadhi’s experienced dance and aerial arts professionals. She is an aerial teacher at Samadhi Hawaii, focusing on dance trapeze. She is also member of Samadhi’s Apprentice Company. Her training also includes the introduction to aerial teaching through NECCA (New England Center for the Circus Arts), and she has participated in numerous aerial workshops, including a trapeze workshop with Susan Murphy of Marsh Studio.

Sharlene complements her aerial practice with Nia and other mind-body movement formats. She is a certified Nia Black Belt teacher, and has been teaching Nia since 2004. She is an Aquatic Exercise Association certified aqua instructor, has received her RYT-200 yoga training through Yoga Alliance, and received her aerial yoga training from Leva Aerial Yoga.

I’m so proud of one of my dear and longest-known friends on island, Shar! And I’m so glad she has rejoined us at Still & Moving, now to teach aerial classes. She and I began teaching Nia at about the same time, about 2003-4 and worked our way through Black Belt training over the years. Whew!

Shar has since been performing, getting trained and teaching aerial with Samadhi for more than 7 years. She also took teacher trainings at Still & Moving Center: her Aerial Yoga training from Leva Aerial Yoga and Aerial Dance teacher training from NECCA (New England Center for the Circus Arts). Sharlene received her RYT-200 yoga training through Yoga Alliance, and she is also a certified aqua instructor.

Shar is irrepressible and unstoppable. When Shar was a little girl, her grandmother told her she danced “like a stick”, took her out of hula class and bought her a horse instead. I’m guessing the horse was a better teacher than the hula instructor. Shar grew up to become a beautiful, skilled dancer – both on the floor and in the air! And she’s never lost her childlike playfulness that always adds a spark of fun to every class she teaches.

A friend to all, Shar has something good to say to everyone. She believes that the array of mind-body movement formats that she practices bring balance, joy and creativity to her life – not to mention channeling her endless energy!

Look for Shar on our aerial class schedule this month!

Given the lyrical, gracefully acrobatic movements aerialists can perform on this apparatus, it is appropriately called “lyra”. While upper body strength is cultivated by practicing lyra, it also provides beautiful resting poses.

This class is for students who are able to get on and off the lyra without a spot. Students will learn basic poses and variations under the lyra, straddles with variations, poses in the lyra, and balance poses. Contra-indications for aerial classes: glaucoma, heart-conditions, fused spine, pregnancy beyond doctor recommendation. Clothing requirements: tight-fitting; no zippers or metal; under-arms covered. No jewelry.
