Can the Aloha Spirit heal our bodies, our relationships, and our world? Diagnosed with stage 2 Colorectal cancer, Makala Kozo Hattori refused conventional treatments of chemo, radiation, and surgery in favor of healing with Aloha practices handed down from his kûpuna (elders). He has found that Aloha can not only heal the body, but also bring peace to relationships and the world (Aloha ‘Âina). This workshop combines Hawaiian practices like ho’oponopono, hula, and “talk story”; Eastern practices like Yoga Nidra and meditation: with Western research in compassion cultivation and vagus nerve activation to bring healing into all aspects of our lives.

At the 1970 Governor’s Conference in Honolulu, a kûpuna (an elder) affectionately known as Aunty Pîlahi Pâkî announced, “…in the next millennium the world will turn to Hawai`i in its search for world peace because Hawai’i has the key…and that key is ALOHA.” Aloha Awakenings invites participants to explore in-depth the power of ALOHA to bring peace, tranquility, and love into our lives, relationships, and communities. We will explore embodied mindfulness movements that free the body, open the heart, and nourish the soul. We will “talk story” and sit in silence to deeply connect with each other. We will learn how to continuously live aloha and awaken to our true compassionate selves. Please come prepared to delve deeply into movement, stillness, and unconditional love.

Inspired by ServiceSpace.org and their practice of gift ecology, this workshop is given freely with an opportunity to pay-it-forward. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

portraitI am not an expert nor a master. I am just a host. I bring forth and share what has been given to me from my ‘Aumakua, my teachers, and my Hawaiian grandfather, Keneze Kaohiaimakuakama Wood. I have been blessed to study aikido, zen, vipassana, surfing, ho’oponopono, qigong, and aloha from a variety of masters.Trying to preserve Hawaiian wisdom, I interviewed kûpuna like Pono Shim, Paul Strauch Jr. and Suzi Kawaiohiokekaikaiona’okalâni Ko. I also created the Compassionate Men’s Interview Series which includes interviews with Thich Nhat Hanh, Rick Hanson, Father Richard Rohr, and Dan Siegel.

Recently, I was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer. The doctors insisted that I start chemo and radiation to prepare for surgery. When I “ ua ‘ike” (peered) into my “na’au” (guts), where I was told the tumor was, it became clear that conventional medicine was not the best path for my healing, so I began treating this dis-ease with Hawaiian healing arts like pule, ho’oponopono, and aloha. I have faith in my kûpuna and ‘aumakua to provide the most appropriate healing for my soul, whatever form that may take. I offer my teachings as a gift from my ancestors to whomever it serves.

Aloha Awakenings Talk Story Satsang is a short introduction to the full-day Aloha Awakenings workshop on Sept 12. In this one hour session, we will sit in silence for 20 minutes, learn and practice some vagus nerve activation exercises for 20 minutes, and share or “talk story” for 20 minutes. Satsang means “true company,” so the power of the satsang comes from the whole circle of participants, not just the facilitator. Makala looks forward to sharing space with those who feel drawn to this gathering.

Inspired by ServiceSpace.org and their practice of gift ecology, this workshop is given freely with an opportunity to pay-it-forward. Refreshments and snacks will be served.
