Hawaiian lomilomi massage is unique in all of the ways that Hawai’i is unique.  Lomilomi acknowledges and appreciates the influence of Hawaii’s natural environment on its healing practices. This training provides a foundation in lomilomi that is appropriate for use in a spa setting or within the family.

Malia introduces bodywork in the first lesson, so look forward to giving and receiving massage in every session! Each weekly session builds upon the last so that lessons and themes are intertwined.

Topics in the training include, but are not limited to, Hawaiian terminology for the course, opening and closing protocols, palpation, using the bones as guides, and body systems found in nature. To complement the lomilomi massage techniques, students also learn relevant components of oli (chanting), hula (dance), pule (prayer) and ‘olelo (language). Lei-making develops skills in the hands and fingers and illustrates the importance of a firm yet sensitive touch. Students will also learn the significance of the moon throughout this training.

This particular lomilomi training, focused on “Finding Your Voice”, helps you to develop your voice that is heard as well as your intuitive, inner voice.  We will explore various kinds of Hawaiian prayers and participants will learn to compose prayers for their own use. Prayer is common to all lomilomi lineages. It connects us to the divine and to the ancestors, and acknowledges that healing comes through us and not from us.

“Finding Your Voice”, is one of 8 complementary lomilomi massage training programs, each 16 hours long. Malia will give this current “Voice” training compressed  into a single weekend intensive, 16 hours long. As a whole, her 8 complementary programs, each with its own focus, provide 128 hours of training that comprise her full culturally-based approach to lomilomi massage.

Kumu Malia Ko’i’ulaokawaolehua Helela  strives to live a life of grace. She began her formal training in lomilomi as a teenager. She was licensed by the State of Hawaii as a massage therapist in 1998 and as an esthetician in 2002. Her hula practice and lomilomi practice, she says, are the same. Her hula halau, which meets at Still & Moving Center, is Na Hula Ola Aloha. Completing her ‘uniki under Pulu’elo Park, Kumu Hula,  in 2002, Kumu Malia now teaches hula and oli to a wide range of students, from infants and toddlers to kupuna. Malia studied oli (traditional Hawaiian chant) under John Keola Lake, Kumu Hula. She has received her advanced lomilomi training from Kumu Keola Chan. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration.

We journey into the Nia’s 5 Core Competencies for increased skills & knowledge with:

  1. Nia’s Philosophy – The Body’s Way and the study of the Body’s inherent wisdom
  2.  Science – the study of  awareness and vitality in order to create knowledge for a healthy body and lifestyle to live as a sacred athlete into your greatest potential.
  3.  Anatomy – the study of the body parts and system for body literacy.
  4.  Movement – the study of healthy potential to use movement to transform the body.
  5.  Music – the study of sound, health and expression.  Enhancing our connection to the language of sound.

We clarify the 13 Nia White Belt Principles so you embody the skill to confidently teach Nia.

All unfolds in a relaxed, loving, and encouraging environment with generative feedback to grow and embody teaching tools.

About the Nia Green Belt

Green Belt is an optional training, which focuses entirely on developing and embodying the skills to effectively teach Nia. All belt levels who teach or desire to teach are strongly encouraged to attend this training.

The Nia Promise and Delivering the Nia Experience are phrases we use to express the transformative power of Nia; to a Nia Teacher’s ability to deeply move and touch people within the classroom environment. As a teacher, your role is to guide people through a meaningful journey of physical conditioning and self-discovery. Teaching Nia is all about sharing your personal experience – your physical and emotional sensations, visual images and feelings. To do so, you must have a solid understanding of the form, objective curriculum and communication techniques.

Green Belt comprehensively explores all mechanics of delivering the work, including embodying the choreography, cueing, creating intentional silences, dancing to the music and helping people achieve their personal fitness goals. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned teacher, Green Belt will further your teaching skills. New teachers develop confidence, craft and skill by learning and practicing the foundations of teaching. Seasoned teachers refine and deepen their understanding, building on their craft and receiving feedback from peers to deliver the most powerful experience possible.

The Green Belt training includes a pre-training course based on the 13 White Belt principles. As part of the training, you will learn and work with the routine, Wild.

For handstand enthusiasts who want to balance in the middle of the room with straight alignment. This class focuses on developing the foundational elements of wrists, shoulders and core strength needed to get you up and staying there. We explore basic to advanced entries, as well as slow, precise exits. With these techniques, Kevin in a very short period of time mastered many of the handstand’s most challenging entries, including pike press up and from crow pose. He can show you how! This class is a great follow-up to a vinyasa yoga flow.

Having taught for almost 30 years, Kevin Ralbovsky PGA  is considered Hawaii’s top golf instructor. He was awarded that honor from Golf Digest Magazine and the Aloha Section PGA multiple times. His passion and daily practice of yoga led him to deeper explorations into the study of handstand biomechanics. Finding your vertical axis and controlling your center of gravity is crucial in both the golf swing and in handstand. Miguel Sant’ana’s hand balance workshop inspired him. Kevin continues to work with notable yogis Daniel Rama, Justin Wolfer and Brigitte Snyder to understand advanced anatomical alignments.

The eyes organize the spine. They can help it to turn better and become more elongated. Eyes, neck and back are intimately connected.

The potential benefits of this seminar include better eyes, improved memory, good posture and more mobility in your entire spine. Eyes do not have to deteriorate when you get older. Glasses are not the cure for bad vision; They are merely a good crutch. If your eyes don’t work as well as you want them to, you can improve them and your spine with these wonderful Feldenkrais eye lessons.

The Feldenkrais Method® is a very advanced approach to body-mind integration and healing. We learn to re-pattern our movement as we develop awareness of how our brain and body co-function while moving. Feldenkrais Method® share many of the same principles and techniques with qigong. These movements are simple and gentle and can be repeated at home once you learn them.

Learn to breathe well, and you’ll lose that pain in your neck… Wait, what?!?

Surprisingly, learning to move the diaphragm and ribcage can unlock neck tension, scoliosis and immobility in the spine! Proper breathing provides huge benefits, including mental health! Oxygen is our primary source of energy, our lifeline, even before water and food: breathe well and everything changes.

In this workshop you get acquainted with your biggest muscle, the diaphragm. Once you learn to ‘drive’ this ‘motor’ in the center of your body, you move everything connected to it with greater ease. The diaphragm and the musculature between the ribs learn to work together. Your ribcage frees up and softens, and your spine elongates. The breath benefit travels up through your thoracic spine into your neck!  Who knew?

What others say about the Feldenkrais Method:

“I suffered a back injury on top of scoliosis for 8 years until a Feldenkrais practitioner asked me, ‘Do you know that you don’t need to be  in that pain?’ And, thanks to Feldenkrais, she was right.” – Renée Tillotson, Director, Still & Moving Center

“… It has allowed me to play pain free golf, without worrying about injury.” – Duffy Waldorf, PGA Tour Golfer

“… It has had an enormous effect on the way I run and on the way I live my life. My knee problem vanished. I’ve increased my mileage considerably without a trace of difficulty. And I’m running faster.” – Bruce Holmes, Runner’s World

“Feldenkrais has given me the power to take responsibility for any habits that don’t serve me, and the skills to transcend them.” – David Fein

“ … It has taught me how to shift a moment of pain into a lifetime of curiosity.” – Buffy Owens

“Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.” – Moshe Feldenkrais
