Unlock energy and stimulate multidimensional movement creativity with Nia FreeDance. Nia Black Belt Krista Hiser teaches Nia FreeDance every Thursday at 5:45pm, with a monthly FRIDAY FREEDANCE version to celebrate and develop Oahu’s conscious dance community.

Cultivate life force energy though this 60 minute conscious dance experience of music, movement, and magic. Nia FreeDance is lightly guided through the realms of physical body, mental body, emotional body, and your spirit, to intentionally craft multi-dimensional creativity. Benefits include enhanced physical conditioning, self-healing, deep listening, and emotional self-awareness.

Nia Black Belt Krista Hiser guides Nia FreeDance through carefully crafted soundscapes, vocal cuing, witnessing, modeling, and demonstrating the tools and stages of the Nia FreeDance practice. Fans of ecstatic dance will gain new insights, and anyone new to conscious dance will find practical tips to unlock their movement creativity. No experience in anything is required.

After the dance, we share experiences and insights to reflect on the practice. Participants have shared that:

“I feel like I can really just be me.”
“It’s like I’m resetting my aura every week.”
“I thought I was tired but I discovered new energy.”
“I revisited a memory and got a new perspective.”
“I love just listening to the music. It’s an experience I couldn’t create for myself.”

“In my experience, Nia FreeDance Technique®️ dynamically and organically utilizes my own inner knowing. I stay present through seven stages that integrate and realign my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. Nia FreeDance is more than just joy of movement, it is a freeing architecture that enhances my self-healing and a deep therapeutic relationship with myself.  Being present creates an auric shift to align with my highest Self. Nia FreeDance helps unlock my greatest potentials.” – Lani Kwon

When I stepped into my first Nia class, I thought “this is it!” It was like a cool dance party, except it was 9 am, and in a gym. I could get fit, have fun, and wear cool pants! For me, Nia is the ultimate in efficiency: in one hour, I get a physical workout, a mental re-set, an emotional experience through music, and an energizing connection to my sacred purpose on the planet. It’s a workout, a dance party with friends, and a therapy session wrapped into one amazing hour! Nia is THE 21st century fitness modality! In my classes, I create an energetic, athletic experience for every-BODY, grounded in the joy of movement, clarity of the 52 moves, freedance, and luxurious floorplay and relaxation. My style is athletic, creative, and zany. I teach Nia from my heart and I’m usually surprised at what comes out. I love to play with the spirit and energy of the group – each class is a unique co-creation that will never happen again! I am committed to Nia as a personal practice, and I teach it as a cumulative subject of inquiry. You can just show up to work out and break a sweat, but if you really choose Nia, my classes can be a catalyst transformative change. I am here to empower each participant to love their body and their life, and to impact our community and the world by doing whatever it is they do, and doing it better! At Still and Moving, the Athletic Nia class is 15 minutes longer, allowing a sustained cardio peak and additional time for conditioning floorplay and strength work. In Nia, “Athletic” refers to options that can leave the ground with a jump, or press into the floor with a push up. I teach Athletic Nia by modeling the edge of Nia choreography and adding improvisational bursts of energy and freedance. But the words you will hear most out of my mouth are: “you choose,” and “here’s an option,” making even my most athletic class accessible and inspiring for all.

Authentic Movement cultivates a contemplative frame of mind, clarity of perception, and movement that is personally enhancing. You may experience Authentic Movement as meaningful play, full of fun. At other times you may experience intense feelings and receive helpful insight into the wisdom of your own body. For our first hour we will practice Authentic Movement, usually done with eyes closed and attention directed inward. We then step from this authentic, more internal place into the eyes-open practice of Conscious Dance. As Rachel Phillipe describes Conscious Dance, “There are people swaying, rolling, leaping, singing, skipping, stretching… dancing. Their humanity expressed so freely, so fully, is a siren song to my soul.”

Authentic Movement is a simple form of self-directed movement, usually done in the presence of at least one witness.  The particular relationship between mover and witness, in moving and being seen by another, creates a powerful framework within which this work takes place.

Authentic Movement’s original practitioners integrated Jung’s concept of active imagination with modern dance movement improvisation:

  • as a meditative, spiritual practice that integrates body and mind for increased access to consciousness.
  • as artistic support, to connect with creativity and creative process, un-blocking and opening to new ideas.

Conscious Dance, also known as Ecstatic Dance, serves as “a vehicle for self-expression, discovery and healing. Unguided, unstructured, free-form felt movement is being used as a conduit into embodiment, into consciousness beyond thought. Through creating a safe, nonjudgmental and uninhibited space people are able to bypass the thinking mind entirely and move deeply into the feeling body, the healing body, the knowing body.

“It is an opportunity to simply Be. Be with yourself in motion to music within community. The group synergizes a safe container for everyone to feel and express fully whatever is present for her that day. Those attending an ecstatic dance are everyday normal people who are open to experimenting with and expressing themselves through dance.” – Rachel Philippe

Eva Alewa Geueke has lead dance classes and guided events for 30 years now. She is a dancer at heart, as well as a professionally trained Dancer, who has always been interested in meaningful, authentic and transformative dance without being heady. Dance for her is a universal language that opens the heart, frees the spirit and brings peace, joy, health, creativity and positive transformation to the individual and therefor to the world. Eva loves to learn choreographed dances but feels that needs to be balanced with the expression of one’s own personal dance language that comes out of oneself, a movement language that does not need to be judged, criticized or remembered. It lives beyond right and wrong, beautiful and ugly in the glorious moment of one’s authentic truth. Eva learned about the transformative force of Authentic Movement as well as Contact Improvisation in her formative years as a dancer in the New York’s Improvisational Dance scene.

Enjoy a wealth of wonderful techniques to warm up the body, including massage and gentle joint mobilization. We help each other to start the dance feeling happy in the body, open in the joints. Try movement games that will stretch your movement horizon and bring you the joy of creative exploration. Adding contact with other people further expands the scope of possibilities!

We trust the divine flow that happens when we put our busy head aside and simply, freely dance with another person or with the floor itself as a partner.

Contact improvisation is an international movement art where two or more people dance together sharing physical contact. Through contact with another dancer you gain many more movement possibilities: partnering, rolling, lifting, pushing, pulling and guiding. As this is an improvised dance form, you can choose to move slow and gently with your partner or make it more acrobatic and athletic. Eva will adjust to all levels and teaches safe and healthy Contact Improvisation!
