Classical Indian-trained vocalist Joss Jaffe believes in the power of healing through your own voice, surrounded and supported by the voices of others. Using Indian mantras, seed syllables, sargam (Indian note names) and songs, Joss leads singers on a musical journey in a safe, encouraging environment of self-discovery. Joss’ workshops are designed to benefit all levels of singers. He loves working with “the total beginner” helping them find their own voice through the joy of singing.  Experienced singers will delight in all sorts of new challenges.www.josstunes.com/releases

Joss has collaborated on vocalization workshops with master singing teachers Montino Bourbon and Silvia Nakkach of the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. His latest offering – a CD entitled ‘Dub Mantra’ – has been critically acclaimed in LA Yoga Magazine and other publications.
Testimonial by Renee Tillotson, Director of the Still & Moving Center:

“Joss Jaffe gives a joyful, powerful workshop that allows students to experience the beauty of their voices – even those of us with fears and insecurities about singing! In particular, he taught the use of voice in the context of the Indian music tradition. Joss – it turns out – has had years of Indian music training, having studied over a decade with the great sarode master, Ali Akbar Khan. I felt as if Joss distilled a year of his own training down into 15 minutes of teaching to us, and he did that over and over again during the workshop. He took us from the very beginning stages of giving voice by sustaining long notes, finding the pitch, then on to learning an Indian major scale.  From there he used call and response to help us find intervals – even if we had little prior musical training.  He taught us slides and glissades that showed the extremely open space between notes and the range of vocal possibility that is therefore available.

All along the way, he was introducing us to the important Indian version of Do Re Mi, eventually applying it to an interesting Indian scale that Western music doesn’t usually use – but for none of this did we ever look at a sheet of music or get into discussions of music theory.  He led us through it as easily as taking us along a gentle path.  By the end of the workshop, he had us singing an authentic India raga. Really. All that in just two hours!  The vibration was so high we practically floated out, feeling as if we could sing with Krishna’s gopi’s, making beautiful music.  Joss is truly a gifted teacher.”
