Please join us for a hō’ike showcasing Kumu Mālia Helelā and her hālau Nā Hula Ola Aloha (Hula that Thrives with Love). We celebrate the 10-year anniversary of her ‘ūniki – the traditional ceremony that marked her graduation as a kumu hula. Malia started her hula training with Pulu’elo Park at the age of eight and completed her ‘ūniki in 2002. Since then, Mālia has shared hula with students from 8 weeks to 80 years of age, both in Hawaii and Japan. She was chosen as the kumu hula for Still & Moving Center because of her large heart and great openness to the diverse and multi-cultural student body. The hula performances by Kumu Mālia and her hālau will be followed by kanikapila style music and dance entertainment with music of the band Kahuli and other local artists! The foundation of Kumu Mālia’s teaching is to honor the work of her teachers and ancestors and to come from a place of aloha always
