Celebrate with us a tradition honored in the Mexico and Latin America. Known as ‘The Day of the Dead’, this annual event pays homage to the deceased and to one’s ancestors, as well as serving as a fiesta for the living. As Hawaii’s oldest Day of the Dead Celebration (14 years and counting), Willow Chang’s Dia De Los Muertos celebration has become a time-honored tradition itself, along with similarly intended celebrations such as Ching Ming/Bai Sain (Chinese) or the O-Bon season (of Japan). Dia De Los Muertos laughs at the scariness of death; people’s feelings of closeness to the dearly departed defy their separation. Bring a photo to place on for the community altar (offrenda), which will be decorated with other traditional elements, such as marigolds, incense, candles and sugared skulls. This year, enjoy the offrendas by special guest artists. Dress as a skeleton, enter our costume contest and join our parade procession starting at Still & Moving Center, touring the Ward/Kakaako area and returning to Still & Moving.
Here, you’ll enjoy a night of guest performances. Past year’s celebrations have featured storytelling, music, dance theater, beatboxing, circus sideshow acts and beyond! Contact Willow Chang if you wish to perform. The health-conscious folks at Still & Moving Center will have delicioso Mexican-themed, non-alcoholic and vegetarian refreshments available for purchase! (We’re trying to keep you on our side of the grave as long as possible!!!)
