Originally from Bangalore international jazz musician, Amit Heri, has been studying & practicing yoga in India with one of it’s hidden treasures and masters – Mysore S Viswanath (Masterji), nephew of Ashtanga Yoga founder Sri Pattabhi Jois. He practices and studies (Patanjali’s) Ashtanga Yoga system and Hatha Yoga in the tradition of Sage Gorakhshanath. Amit received his teacher training certification from Masterji and has assisted him in his classes. He has also practiced at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, with several Iyengar teachers in Pune, Mumbai, San Francisco and with Yana Lewis and O. S. Arun in Bangalore. In the west, he has studied with Bhavani Maki (in Kauai) and has participated in workshops with Tias Little, Ana Forrest, Dharma Mittra and Desiree Rumbaugh, to name a few. He is an E-RYT 200, RYT 500 with the Yoga Alliance International and presently teaches on the island of Kauai, Hawaii at Yoga Hanalei and Metamorphose yoga.
He is one among few exceptional Indian musicians to have performed in prestigious international venues, including the Kennedy Centre, the Barbican, Montreux Jazz festival, Berlin Jazz festival WOMAD, London Jazz festival, Rome World Music festival and the Paris Jazz festival. As a guitarist, he has shared the stage and worked with numerous internationally renowned Jazz and World music artists including Charlie Mariano, Zakir Hussain, Salif Keita, Angelique Kidjo, Trilok Gurtu, Matt Garrison, Dominique DiPiazza and Robert Miles.
At the early age of 16, his passion for music earned him a scholarship at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied Jazz Performance & Composition. He also has a strong foundation in Indian music – melodic and rhythmic, having studied voice, sitar & vocal percussion from a young age. Amit Heri’s artistry is centered around presenting Indian music and Jazz in an innovative and global form, with the purpose of bringing joy and connection between people and cultures.
