In Part 2 of the 3D Walking workshops, we explore ways to mobilize the thoracic spine (upper back), shoulder girdles, and pelvis for a smooth, well-balanced gait. Few of us consciously move all these different parts of the body while walking! And many of us don’t move these parts much at all. This is the amazing 3-dimensionality of human walking we’ll be playing with in this workshop!
We also learn to safely counter-rotate while standing: our hips in one direction while our upper body moves in the other. Moving in such ways, standing and especially walking, can open doors in the brain. It can undo coordination difficulties in athletics, dance, and many daily activities, such as unloading the groceries or pulling a suitcase. This workshop also helps those who would like their shoulders and their pelvis to be more mobile.
This workshop also helps those who would like their shoulders to be more mobile.
We were babies when we first explored moving our shoulders and upper back in opposition to the movement of our pelvis. This opposing swing while walking – with a natural twist of our upper and lower spine – lends balance and mobility to our step.
Such cross-lateral movement also significantly develops our thinking and brain. For many people, this pattern may not be clear, especially if we skipped the crawling stage of our babyhood before walking, potentially leading to disalexia, coordination and balance issues.
Who knew simple improvements in our walk could help our brains?!? Actually there is an answer: the brilliant Moshe Feldenkrais.
Again, come walk your walk… better than you’ve walked in a long time! You’ll feel great and think more clearly, too!
