Here’s your chance to be trained in authentic Hawaiian massage techniques with cultural practices… not just inside but also at the beach!

Hawaii’s natural environment has given rise to unique healing practices. This summer lomi intensive training takes a closer look at this influence through visits to storied places and exercises in touch sensitivity at the beach.

Telling Stories with sand at Pupukea for a glimpse into Kumu Māliaʻs method: https://youtu.be/se1hXJqNwK0

Having first learned lomilomi as a child from her mother, then practicing it professionally for the last 20 years, Kumu Mālia provides a foundation in lomilomi massage that is appropriate for use within the family or in a spa setting. The material is appropriate for both licensed massage therapists (LMT’s) as well as individuals who want to cultivate their ability to help their loved ones feel better through touch.

Topics include but are not limited to: Hawaiian terminology, opening and closing protocols, palpation, using the bones as guides, and body systems found in nature. Look forward to giving and receiving plenty of massage!

Hawaiian lomilomi massage is unique in all of the ways that Hawai’i is unique. To enhance their authentic lomilomi massage techniques, students will also learn relevant components of oli (chanting), hula (dance), pule (prayer) and ‘olelo (language). Lei making will develop skills in the hands and fingers as well as illustrate the importance of a firm yet sensitive touch.

For those interested in continuing their initial lomilomi learning, this 16 hour training is Part 2 of a continuing 8 part lomilomi program. Each part stands alone and the all parts can be taken in any order.

Currently accepting students. Please send an email to malia@stillandmovingcenter.com to introduce yourself and share why you are interested in the course. Teacher approval and pre-registration is required. Mahalo.

Kumu Malia Ko’i’ulaokawaolehua Helela

Kumu Mālia Helela strives to live a life of grace. Having received and given massage since childhood, Mālia began her formal training in lomilomi as a teenager. She was licensed by the State of Hawaii as a massage therapist in 1998 and as an esthetician in 2002 and has spent the last twenty years giving massage professionally. Mālia is an active member of Ka Pā o Lonopūhā, a school of lomilomi and Hawaiian healing practices founded by Keola Chan.

In the last three years, Mālia has been training students herself in the art of giving lomilomi massage in 16 hour intensive trainings.

Mālia says her hula practice and lomilomi practice are the same in many ways. She continues to look to the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian environment for grounding and inspiration. Completing her uniki under Kumu Hula Puluelo Park in 2002, she now teaches hula and oli to a wide range of students, from infants and toddlers to kupuna. Mālia studied oli (traditional Hawaiian chant) under Kumu Hula Keola Lake. Her halau (school of hula), named Na Hula Ola Aloha, meets at Still & Moving Center.
